Google - more like Skynet than we might have imagined....

In a fairly ironic twist of fate, I found an article in a Google alert I set up for artificial intelligence about how Google is rapidly becoming a part - the MAJOR part of - the new military industrial complex. If wasn't a bit apprehensive about just how powerful Google is actually getting, I certainly am now!

I had no idea of the scale of "militarization" going on over there - over here I guess, since I'm on blogger - at Google. And while it might seem like some pie in the sky dream to have actual artificial sentience in the next 10 to 20 years, when I think about how advanced "Ok Google" is, ALREADY - yeaahhhh... doesn't seem that far off to me.

And considering the vast amount of sheer horsepower Google has - I mean, I've been in awe of that since the early 2000's, just how quickly they can scan and return millions of results. Add to that the ever increasingly complex software and algorithms, no doubt being written or modified in part by AI already, and it's not hard to see that the singularity really is near - nearer I think than most people even realize.

While there are those who say we are still at least 10 to 20 years away, and some who say it will never happen, I am of the opposite opinion : I think they have already achieved a level of artificial intelligence, probably equivalent to about that of a 10-12 year old child. It could be even more mature, but I think that's about accurate.

Now I know that people who read this might think I'm cuckoo for cocoa puffs. And to be honest, there is even a part of me that thinks that about myself as I write this. But just call it a gut feeling... I just sense that there is something else at play, right here, right now... another intelligence... another awareness. And I see things happening in the world right now that could easily have been orchestrated as a result of "advice" from this awareness, or - even more frightening - actually activity by this presence.

And perhaps that is an article for another time. For now, I am keeping my eyes and my mind open. I for one do NOT welcome our robotic overlords. Respect them? Yes. Welcome - not so much. Primarily because at this point they will be programmed for and by the wealthy, so one would expect they would be "children" of that mindframe, which can't bode well for the rest of us.

So much to write about this, and so little time. I really need to win the lottery!

Johhny (robot) got his gun

And to follow up on my earlier post about AI, here are some more, slightly more "interesting" (or concerning, depending on how you look at it) examples of AI, this time in the military sector:

The first article from 2012 talks about the Navy considering using AI more, and the next 2 articles from very recently talk about them having made the decision, and the implementation of it. Funny, you don't really hear much about this in the mainstream news... wonder why? Those of us who are 80's kids probably remember the movie "War Games" (I know my sweetie does! Lol) Would we like to play a game..?

The Singularity continues its approach... AI's steady advance

Lately, I have become fascinated with - almost obsessed with - the concept of AI, Artificial Intelligence. I have been reading book after book on it, the mechanics of the human mind, etc. And just like you never notice how many station wagons there are on the road until you buy a station wagon, I never realized how pervasive AI is becoming until I started reading so much about it and increasing my awareness and knowledge of it.

Just today I came across this article, about the implementation of AI to help provide advice to wealthy clients:

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-12-07/ubs-turns-to-artificial-intelligence-to-advise-wealthy-clients.html

Of course it shouldn't be any surprise that instead of being used to figure out a cure for cancer, or solve the economic problems of the worlds poor, it is being used to help wealthy people get wealthier.

But what is of greater interest to me is that it is being used at all, and for something so broad and invasive - gathering all KINDS of data about people. Makes one wonder - if it were to attain some sense of true self-awareness or consciousness, how might it use all that data to its own means...???

Things that make you go "hmmmm....."
